The immediate response to resolve drug problems is necessary and it needs a deeper approach on finding ways to treat this disease. Illegal drugs do not only destroy the life of its users but also creates another problem in the society caused by escalation of domestic violence, violent crimes, healthcare problems and job productivities. In 2001, National Household Survey on Drug Abuse and Addiction conducted a study showing that, while millions habitually smoke, engaged to abusive alcoholism and drug snorting; too many drug dependents who meet the criteria for needing drug treatment do not recognize that they have a drug addiction problem.
Treatment for drug addiction takes quite some time before a patient can achieve full recovery. Several physical and behavioral changes are observed from the patient during the process. Drug rehabilitation program is one of the most effective solution of healing and reforming a drug addict. On the first treatment, the patient will experience withdrawal symptoms. This process is called detoxification in which the body allows to be free from drugs, depending on the needs of the patient. Detoxification also involves treatment of the withdrawal symptoms. It needs proper monitoring of the medical team because this process may be severe and even dangerous to a patient.
After a successful detoxification of the patient, he or she needs further treatment either in an outpatient rehab, inpatient rehab, residential, or at day hospital program in order to remain drug-free for the long term. Family intervention and support is also important to give moral support to the patient for faster recovery. Family support can also lessen the complications brought by several therapies that a patient will undergo.
